Steve is a passionate and acknowledged leader in the field of accessibility. He has particularly focused on delivering innovation and solutions that bring about accessibility to people with disabilities to mainstream products – from electronic payment systems and ATMs to a number of “firsts” – the first range of fully accessible digital television equipment, first ever fully accessible mobile devices, first accessible DAB radio tuner.
He has worked to influence web standards, app development standards, has been influential at global electronics regulatory mechanisms, works on policy and legal issues around disability and accessibility, and, as a person with a visual impairment, is an advocate in his own right.
Long term sustainable change such that accessibility becomes an everyday feature is fundamental to Steve’s ambition – finding business propositions and solutions that make sense from a financial or regulatory perspective and building those in to product life cycles – is a real endeavour. Delivering the voice that drives Amazon’s Alexa is an example of that longer term envisioning, strategy to go with it, and a delivery that triggers accessible mainstream solutions, including from Amazon’s competitors.
